Tour at The Herzl Museum
We ordered tickets for the 10:30 tour on a weekday in August. Museums are a good option for hot summer days since they are air-conditioned. Moreover, this tour is suited for families (I would say for kids starting elementary school, or maybe even a little younger).
We met our guide, and she started telling us about Herzl. Did you know that he was a lawyer? Most lawyers aspired to become judges, but he understood that as a jew, he would not be a judge. Saddened by that, he returned to his old love, writing.
His short stories were relatively successful. And he was offered a journalist position in Paris. In Paris, he saw the Dreyfus affair. He was used to antisemitism in Austria. But France had a humanist image, and despite that, there was plenty of antisemitism. Seeing the situation, Herzl understood that assimilation of Jews into European society was not an option.
Following that realization, Herzl wrote a booklet called “The Jewish State”. This booklet became very popular and was translated into many languages. And in 1897, he organized the First Zionist Congress in Basel.

Herzl spent all his family’s fortune to meet with leaders all around the world in an attempt to persuade them to support the creation of a Jewish state. But despite all his efforts, he had limited success. And though none of the leaders supported him, his idea continued to live and became a reality fifty years later.
Herzl died at the age of 44 due to heart failure. He was buried in Vienna. But in his will, Herzl asked to be buried in the Jewish state when it would be created. And in 1949, his remains were moved to Israel, and he was buried on Mount Herzl.

After the tour, we decided to make a short stroll on Mount Herzl.

It took us about five minutes to reach Herzl’s tomb. But since it was a very hot day, we decided to return to the light train station.
How Much Time Does a Typical Visit Take?

Summary
The tour at the Herzl Museum was a delightful experience. It was relatively short and included many movie clips, making it suitable for families. My children, aged six and a teenager, both enjoyed the visit. We all loved the tour. However, since it is brief, I recommend combining it with visits to other nearby attractions.
